Spine Week 12 Case 9

History: 8 years old. Progressive lower limb weakness and sensory disturbance.
Findings: The patient has a marked scoliosis. The thoracic cord is expanded, and there is an extensive cord syrinx, from T1 to T7, with poorly-defined enhancing soft tissue components around T3/T4 levels and at the inferior margins of the syrinx. There is also evidence of previous haemorrhage. No intracranial lesion.
Opinion: The presence of enhanicng tissue suggests a syrinx secondary to tumour. In this age group, an astrocytoma is possible.
